Family

The history of our winery starts in 1910, when Albert Pöckl returned to Austria after having lived in Minnesota, USA, for 10 years. He laid the cornerstone for our farm which comprised cultivation of land, livestock breeding and viniculture at that time. Together with his wife Katharina he also ran the village's tavern.
In 1945 Albert handed the farm over to his son Theodor Pöckl, who started to focus on winegrowing. Theodor and his wife Magdalena expanded the business to 10 hectares and thus created a good base for the future development of our winery, which has been pushed forward with great enthusiasm by son Josef.
Josef Pöckl, born in 1951, took over in 1979 and transformed the company into a true winery. In 1986 he redefined the focus of our winery once again: From then, he and his wife Theresa exclusively grew red grape varieties.
Considering the climate and the composition of the soils, Josef has planted the well-known regional grape varieties Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, St. Laurent and Pinot Noir. He also started to experiment with the international varieties Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
By visiting different wine growing countries, Josef was able to exchange opinions and knowledge with other wine growers and discuss typicalities of grape varieties as well as ageing techniques. Already in 1989 we started to use Barrique-barrels and since 1990 we are producing red wine cuvées.
In the meantime, our winery has grown to a size of 32 hectares and has invested in many top vineyard sites. Many national and international successes confirm the outstanding quality of our wines, which are characterised by intense fruit, elegance and distinct tannins. These attributes ensure that our wines give pleasure for many years and are also René Pöckl's fingerprint, who is winemaker since 2002 and now leads our winery.
René is supported by his mother Theresa, who manages sales with charme and fairness, especially when it comes to the distribution of wines only available in limited quantities. His wife Eva takes care of all administrative tasks, such as human resource management, accounting and purchasing. And our little one, Jan, spreads his happiness and energy to lead our family to all-time highs.
