Pöckl's Admiral turn 20

(Mönchhof, October 2009) - 20 years after the wine's first harvest, Weingut Pöckl celebrates the long term success of their well known Admiral. From 24 to 26 October, just at the end of this year's harvest, guests from all over Europe have been invited to the winery to taste all 20 vintages of this great red wine.

The vintages 1989 to 1994 were served from Magnum bottles, which have proven successful in the long time storage of high quality wines. Vintage 1989 was represented by two wines, one based on St. Laurent and the other based on Zweigelt grapes. In its first year, Admiral was still made from single grape varieties and the bottles have been labelled with an image of a butterfly. The name of the wine derived from this butterfly called Vanessa atalanta, also known as Red Admiral.

Since 1990, Admiral is a blend of different grape varieties but despite its constantly changing mix, the wine always keeps its grand character. Although the Pöckl family is usually reluctant to hand out barrel samples, on Admiral's birthday a sample of Admiral 2008 was served. This wine will only be on sale as of autumn next year.

"This event was a big success. Almost 400 guests visited our winery. Our Austrian habitués mingled with visitors from Sweden, Germany, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. Everyone was enthusiastic about the development of our Admiral and also the early vintages presented themselves proudly. Wine lovers who stored some bottles of Admiral in their cellars can look forward to an exceptional tasting experience that our wine offers for many years," says René Pöckl, Cellar Master at Weingut Pöckl.

The wines have been accompanied by a small buffet of cheese, ham, typical Austrian Grammelpogatscherl and Bavarian veal sausages. Furthermore, the new vintage of Pöckl's complete red wine range has been presented on this day. So, already before the traditional start of the season, fans of reds were invited to taste the wines and take home their orders of 2007 Rosso e Nero, Pinot Noir, Admiral and Rêve de Jeunesse.
